Where Do I Find a Hotel on a Budget?

Forget about skipping your family vacation this year. Instead, think outside the box and look for ways to book a room on a budget. If you think about it rationally, there is no reason why you can’t save a few dollars each week to unwind and create indelible family memories that will last a lifetime. The average family-of-four budgeted $4,000 for their 2010 getaway, according to a survey conducted by American Express. While that may sound like a lot, the household need only sock away $76/week throughout the year. This can come directly from each paycheck and go into a separate account so that money is out-of-sight-out-of-mind. Yet, there are also ways to spend far less on vacation. For instance, the survey found that 42 percent of younger travelers and 24 percent of the general population planned to use the Internet to bargain hunt for cheap hotels.

Hotel chains want you to believe you can find the best deal booking directly through their websites, but we all know this isn’t the case. The best way to find a hotel is by looking through a third party site… but which one? There’s Expedia, Priceline, Hotels.com, Orbitz, Kayak, Travelocity, and dozens more. It can get pretty confusing trying to comparison shop all these different sites, which brings us to the travel site aggregators like Find-A-Hotel.net. These new websites will compare all the other travel sites to really find you the best hotel rooms for less.

Pick the right dates and plan ahead.

Say I want to find 4-star discount hotels in Boston, Massachusetts. If I’m a last-minute person and I want to book a few weeks in advance to go during the warm August months, I’d have to pay $222 to stay at the Langham Hotel. However, if I planned to travel during the week of Thanksgiving -- a non-peak time when everyone else is leaving Boston and going somewhere warmer -- I could stay at the Omni Parker House Hotel for $110/night, thus saving me $784 on a one-week stay. For that kind of savings, I can bundle up!

Find a hotel that is nice & clean, but offers fewer amenities.

Are you really going to swim in the hotel pool while you’re there? Are you going to dine right on-site in the fancy restaurant, or do you want to eat as the locals eat? Do you need a hotel with a spa? It’s important to remember that star ratings do not equate with quality, service or cleanliness. If you just need a place to lay your head, a two-star hotel might work out just fine for you – and you’ll even have a TV and phone in your room. With three-star discount hotels, you’ll have a restaurant and 24-hour reception, perhaps even a spa / pool. When you move to four-star hotel rooms, you’re getting fancier décor, more expensive restaurants, Internet service, airport transfer and cozier bedding. If you have your heart set on that August stay, you can find a hotel with two stars for $131 a night.
